Ten Hose Responds To
Structure Fire East Of Hagerstown....... |
On
February 9th, Washington County E.C.C. dispatchers took reports
of a large building on fire with possible explosions on Beaver
Creek Road east of Hagerstown. Reports came in reporting it to
possibly be a barn on the property of the Kendle Farm. Initial
crews from Funkstown Fire Company 10 along with Mt. Aetna,
Boonsboro, Smithsburg and Community Rescue were quickly
dispatched out for a barn fire at 21:32 hours that night.
Firefighters from Funkstown could see heavy fire as they
approached the scene. Captain Eric Fraley from Company 10
arrived on the scene at 20113 Beaver Creek Road to find a 40 X
160 foot structure fully involved. Captain Fraley immediately
assumed Beaver Creek Command and reported he had multiple
exposures to protect from the blaze. As Command worked to
conduct a scene size up he requested the Working Fire Assignment
started.
First
in firefighters worked to get attack lines in place to protect
the surrounding structures. As crews worked in a defensive mode,
Command requested brush units to the scene to assist due the dry
conditions around the property. Firefighters battled the blaze
for nearly an hour and a half before bringing the fire under
control. Command gave a report to dispatch at 22:54 hours
reporting they had a bulk of the fire knocked down.
Once knocked down, a majority of the tankers on the scene were
released as they dumped their water. Firefighters remained on
scene for a few hours conducting overhaul operations. Command
was terminated at 23:58 hours that night once Captain Fraley
deemed Fire Department Operations complete. Firefighters were on
the scene until shortly before 02:00 assisting FM 25 with
lighting and watching over the smoldering debris. Remnants of
the building did continue to smolder threw out the night and was
being watched over by the property owner for flare-ups.
